Over the past three years my family and I have set aside one week during each summer to stay at Beaver Creek campground located at Elkwater, Alberta. We have found that the beach at Elkwater lake is especially inviting for children. It is well cared for and has food facilities beside the marina. There is a wonderful cafe in the Elkwater store which we have eaten at on numerous occasions. The Provincial Park Service puts on some very entertaining and educational programs which everyone should take advantage of.

If you find that you are running out of things to do or the weather is not co-operating with your plans then you can always drive north to the beautiful city of Medicine Hat where you will find parks, movie theaters and shopping malls to roam through. We did that a couple of years ago when it started to rain and wouldn't quit. This photo was taken at a wonderful park where a crippled Burrowing Owl was being cared for by park staff.

This monster of a thunder storm passed just to the north of Elkwater. We were thankful that it did as it had damaging winds and hail. It was the showers that followed on its heels that convinced us to make a trip to Medicine hat the next day.

I took this picture of the village of Elkwater and the lake about 4 years ago from the top of the hill behind Beaver Creek campground. It was a very hazy day but it still gives you an idea of the beauty of the area. It's hard to imagine that this is in the middle of flat prairie country.

Another side trip we made was to Writing-On-Stone Provincial Park located on the Milk River south-west of Cypress Hills. Although it is not a large park it has a lot of history in it and a beautiful campground.
